404 Page

A custom 404 error page that turns a dead-end into an easter egg — playable video games, word puzzles, and interactive surprises hidden where nobody expects them.

Everyone hits a 404 page eventually — a mistyped URL, a deleted page, an outdated link from somewhere on the web. Most websites serve up a boring “Page Not Found” message. I take it as an opportunity to hide something genuinely fun.

What it does

A 404 page is what your website displays when someone visits a URL that doesn’t exist. Instead of a generic error, I build bespoke 404 pages for every site — fully playable video games, word puzzles, interactive animations, and other creative easter eggs that are unique to each client. Nobody goes looking for a 404 page on purpose. But when someone stumbles onto one, instead of hitting a dead end, they find a surprise.

Try them yourself

Every 404 page I build is different. Here are a few you can play right now:

  • Play Snake — the classic arcade game, built into the HutchTV 404 page
  • Play Asteroids — dodge and blast your way through the MESCo 404 page
  • Wedding Game — a fun wedding-themed game on the Bride’s Day Films 404 page
  • Wedding Wordle — guess the wedding word on Togetherness Collective’s 404 page
  • Where in the World is Jake Smith? — a Carmen Sandiego-style geography game on Married by Jake’s 404 page
  • Catch the Tassie Animal — chase native Tasmanian animals across the Mountain River Flower Patch 404 page
  • Massage Doll — click where it hurts on Justin Taylor Clinic’s 404 page
  • Psychology Word Game — a psychology-themed word game on Erin Taylor’s 404 page
  • Sudoku — my personal favourite, and my go-to game while flying to weddings. A full Sudoku puzzle on my own 404 page

Each one is built from scratch to match the site’s brand and personality. They’re lightweight, they work on mobile, and they turn the worst page on your website into the most memorable.

Why it matters for your business

First impressions aren’t always your homepage. Sometimes the first interaction someone has with your brand is a broken link from Google, an old bookmark, or a URL they mistyped. The 404 page is your chance to make that moment work for you instead of against you.

A creative 404 page does three things: it makes the visitor smile, it shows that your business pays attention to details others overlook, and it gives them a reason to stay on your site instead of hitting the back button. People share cool 404 pages — it’s the kind of small touch that generates word-of-mouth in a way that a polished homepage never will.

It also signals craftsmanship. If even the error page is thoughtful and fun, what does that say about the rest of the site?

What happens without it

Visitors see a generic, unstyled error message — or worse, the hosting provider’s default error page. There’s no navigation, no personality, no way forward. Most people leave immediately, and their lasting impression of your site is “broken.”

A 404 page is one of the cheapest, most creative things you can build, and it turns your site’s worst-case scenario into one of its best moments.

Your digital presence should work as hard as you do.
