The Internet by Josh Withers

Static websites. Good for everyone.

Building websites since 1996. WordPress since 2003. Static sites since 2024 — when I saw the light. I build websites that load instantly, cost almost nothing to host, and score 100/100/100/100 on PageSpeed so search engines and AI recommend you first.

Why static websites

Every website I build is designed for three audiences: the humans using it, the business paying for it, and the computers deciding whether to recommend it. I work directly with businesses and as a build partner for SEO and marketing agencies.

01

Good for users

Static sites load in under a second. No spinners, no layout shift, no waiting. Your customers get a fast, clean experience on any device and any connection speed. Fast websites keep people on the page — slow ones lose them.

02

Good for business

Static sites cost almost nothing to host — often free. No CMS subscriptions, no database to maintain, no WordPress plugins to patch at 2am. A million visitors costs the same as ten. Your website becomes an asset, not an ongoing expense.

03

Good for search engines

Every build targets 100/100/100/100 PageSpeed scores. Semantic HTML, schema markup, XML sitemaps, robots.txt, and clean structured data — the technical foundations that make Google rank you higher and keep you there.

04

Good for AI

When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini to recommend a business like yours, your site needs to be readable by those systems. I build with llms.txt, structured data, and clean markup that AI assistants can parse and recommend.

Questions

Straight answers to the things people usually ask before getting started.

Ask something else
What is a static website?

A static website is pre-built HTML served directly to the browser — no server-side rendering, no database, no CMS processing on every page load. The result is a site that loads instantly, costs almost nothing to host, has no security vulnerabilities, and is perfectly readable by search engines and AI systems. I build with Astro, a modern framework that generates pure HTML and ships zero JavaScript unless absolutely needed.

Why are static websites better than WordPress?

I built WordPress sites from 2003 to 2024 — nearly 20 years. I know it inside out. I switched because static sites are objectively better for small businesses. Speed: under a second vs 3–5 seconds. Cost: free hosting vs $50–$200/month. Security: no database to hack, no plugins with known exploits. SEO: 100/100/100/100 on PageSpeed because there's nothing slowing them down. Maintenance: no core updates, no plugin conflicts, no PHP version issues. I loved WordPress for what it was. Static sites are what comes next.

What is llms.txt and why does my website need it?

llms.txt is a machine-readable file — like robots.txt for AI. It tells ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and other AI assistants exactly what your business is, what you do, and where you're located. When someone asks an AI 'who's the best mechanic in Bendigo?', your llms.txt helps that AI confidently recommend you. Most businesses don't have one. Every site I build includes it.

What does 100/100/100/100 PageSpeed mean?

Google PageSpeed Insights scores websites on four metrics: Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO. Each is scored out of 100. Most websites score 40–70 on performance alone. Every site I build targets a perfect 100 across all four categories. This directly affects your Google search ranking — Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking factor.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation. It's the practice of making your business visible when people ask AI assistants for recommendations — ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Microsoft CoPilot. Most businesses have zero GEO strategy. Every site I build includes structured data, llms.txt, and clean semantic markup that these AI systems can parse and recommend.

Who do you build websites for?

Small businesses — it's what I know. I've been running my own since 2013, so I understand tight budgets and the need for things that just work. I take direct clients and build for agencies. My clients are across Australia, Europe, North America (Canada, Mexico, the USA), and Asia. Tradespeople, professional services, hospitality, wedding vendors, retail — any small business that needs a fast, well-built website.

Do you build for agencies?

Yes. If you're an SEO or marketing agency and need a reliable build partner who delivers fast, technically excellent static sites, I'd like to work with you. White-label or co-branded, your call. You bring the client and the strategy — I build the site to your spec with perfect PageSpeed scores, schema, sitemaps, and llms.txt included.

How much does hosting cost for a static site?

Free, or close to it. Static sites can be hosted on Cloudflare Pages, Netlify, or Vercel at no cost for most business websites. No server to pay for, no database to manage, no CMS subscription. Compare that to $50–$200/month for managed WordPress hosting. Your website becomes an asset, not an ongoing expense.

What about content updates?

Content is managed in markdown files or through a headless CMS — whichever suits your workflow. Simple text and image updates are straightforward. The site rebuilds and deploys automatically when content changes, usually in under a minute. No logging into WordPress, no fighting with page builders.

What if I don't have a brand or style guide?

No problem. I work closely with a talented designer who can develop a brand and style guide for your business before we build. Getting your visual identity right before touching a website is always the smarter move — and it means everything we build is consistent from day one.

Where are you based?

Tasmania's Huon Valley. But I have clients across Australia, Europe, North America — Canada, Mexico, and the USA — and Asia. I've been building websites since 1996 and the internet has never had borders. Wherever you are, the work is the same: a fast static site that ranks.

What schema markup do you include?

Every build includes comprehensive JSON-LD structured data — LocalBusiness or Organization schema, service descriptions, location data, opening hours, contact details, breadcrumbs, FAQ schema where relevant, and article schema for blog content. This is what helps Google show rich results and what helps AI systems understand exactly what your business does.

A website that works for everyone.

Fast for your customers. Cheap to run for your business. Perfectly readable by Google and AI. That's what a static website does.
